Ethics in Criminal Justice Administration Analysis
Ethics in Criminal Justice Administration Analysis
Ethics and professional behavior are important parts in the criminal justice administration. Ethics defines the moral principles of life that help people to understand what is right or wrong. In criminal justice system ethical issues occur very often. The administration must deal with such issues in a professional manner. The authorities should follow the obligations of making moral judgments by using critical thinking about the problem. Law enforcement plays a big role in ethics. So, if the authority performs unethical acts, then society loses faith on the criminal justice system. As a result, different conflicts may arise in between communities. Moreover, administration influences the society to follow ethical behavior towards each other. Thus, ethics is interrelated with professional behavior.
It is possible to understand the ethical roles of law enforcement officers more effectively by organizing a seminar in ethics training. This training can help the officers to act and decide their professional roles towards society during conflicts and violent activities. It can guide officers to work in highly dynamic, emotional circumstances and under pressure. Police officers need higher standards of behavior towards society, because they are the stewards of public trust. They take an oath when they start their works to follow professional codes of ethics. In such seminars, specialists can help them to recognize their definite ethical roles. The seminar can psychologically help the officers to identify various options to address any particular situations or issues. Specialists can guide them to make rational and ethically sound choices. Such trainings provide tools for addressing ethical problems and their particular solutions by accepting responsibility for the outcome. It reminds police professionals to apply their courage to act. When officers respond a particular situation, they should consider two particular components. These components are the reaction through particular emotions and proper action to solve any problem. The law typically gives attention to the action that complies with the law, whereas ethics not only considers the action but also the exact motivation for the action. So, doing right thing for the wrong reason is not ethically correct. The seminar can show the officers the right paths to maintain ethical excellence and motives behind any certain behavior. For a successful ethics training seminar, officers should understand the real purpose and liabilities behind the program. Proper attendance of training session may help police officers to develop their professional and personal life. It can help them to improve their thoughts and decision-making behavior during complex situations. Ethics trainings provide the range of motivations: specialists can use constraints and restraints to manage personal behavior of officials. Also it teaches ethical decision-making process through choices, options and consequences. Thus, it is important to have an ethics training seminar for law enforcement officers (Department of Justice).
In my seminar proposal I would like to add five specific areas of ethical conduct, which can help the officers to develop their ethical behavior towards society.

Encouragement of Integrity
By encouraging the ethical integrity of police officers in seminar, we can evolve their excellent qualities of character in public and personal life. It is important to have integrity in both public and personal life, because each individual fulfills a variety of conflicting and complementary roles in his/her life. Contorting an individual in a particular role is emotionally and physically unhealthy. Thus, by encouraging the integrity of police officers, we can help them to emphasize their moral roles in the society (Florida Department of Law Enforcement).
Risk management is one of the important parts of the ethics training for police officers. The main goal of such practice is to reduce or prevent injury to a property, reputation, people and other assets. Also, it guides officers to remedy any loss or injury that occurs during a complex situation. Such training seminars can guide police administration to avoid the negligent hiring, negligent entrusting, false asserts, failure to supervise, etc. These situations may create complex circumstances that can lead to an ultimate failure or precipitating environment. As a result, it can cause a severe loss or injury. Risk management trainings can teach officers to face effectively complex situations, so it is an important part of training seminar (Florida Department of Law Enforcement).
Exercise of Discretion
Public communication is one of the important responsibilities of police officers. So, they must communicate with people respectfully and professionally. In the seminar, if we add the exercise of discretion, then it can help them to openly acknowledge and understand the guidelines for ethical behavior. Through these trainings officers can learn a vocabulary and thought process, as well as acceptable boundaries of their interrogation. By the proper exercise of discretion, it is possible to make the law more convenient. Also, it softens the impact of law. Hence, it is an important area of ethics training seminar (Gleason).
Equality and Fairness Training
Police officers should be fair and equal to all civilians. They should not take actions to a specific group of people due to their race, skin color or religion. Fairness is defined as the equal treatment of people in similar circumstances. In the seminar specialist can teach officers the ethical way to provide justice or fairness to individuals of different communities. If the officers work in an ethically fair or correct way, they can make a good relation with society and administration (Florida Department of Law Enforcement).
Personal Conduct Training
Police officers should sustain their values in the society. They must be careful about their conduct in the society whether on or off duty. Because any misconduct of an individual police officer may discredit the whole police department. To the training seminar I would like to add the personal conduct training to improve police officers conduct in the public and personal life. Such trainings can help them to improve their skills to perform ethical conduct (Gleason).
From the above discussion we can come to a conclusion that ethical behavior is extremely important in criminal justice system and it is possible to develop such behavior by organizing a seminar in ethics training. These trainings can help police officers to develop and improve their professional and personal ethical conduct. Thus, they can maintain the law and order in a perfect way.
