INTRODUCTION

Current research considers the issue of work security in large companies dealing worldwide. As a subject for the research, we took into consideration a worldwide oil company from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is considered by many to be in the top 4 dominant enterprises in the whole world.

All companies have problems in various spheres of operation and even the most powerful of enterprises experience them. ADNOC is no exception. Though with the financial and other resources it has in possession, its management thinks about its workers trying to make their work experience in the company as pleasant and secure as possible. ADNOC realizes that their workers are the most expensive resources they have, and it is in them that they need to invest and make them proud of working for a company dealing in oil and gas processing, chemical and petrol production as well as other spheres connected to them.

Section 1. Topic Research

ADNOC is a fair player in many spheres of business and competes in different operations in the market niche it takes up. The level of employee work security is high here and is constantly monitored by the corresponding departments of ADNOC. It became achievable through constant following of the Hazard Identification and Risk management Process (HIRA) program.

Risk Control and the elements that are used to maintain it are among the top priorities in the company policy worldwide. Their efficiency and the usage of the HIRA system for security are meant for foreseeing potential dangers and having means to prevent them to keep the work of people safe and secure.

This preventive system is meant for observation and evaluation of all managerial elements. HIRA forecasts, makes an evaluation, and assesses any potential risks for the secure and safe work of the people. The potential risks are tackled by the system in the following way:

1) Assessment of the risk;

2) Evaluation of possible outcomes and consequences;

3) Consideration of the period of potential risk effects.

In order to address the primary and secondary data regarding employee security at work, we have decided to use an online questionnaire to gather the initial data needed for analysis. We considered 32 questionnaire surveys filled out by the ADNOC employees from all over the world. The questions mostly touch upon the conditions of employee security:

1. What is your gender: a male or female?

2. What is your age?

3. Does the company have the Health and Safety Policy in writing?

4. Did you have the possibility to do a risk assessment to locate the possible risks or hazards, as required by the team of Health and Safety at work?

5. Are such terms as employers liability insurance, fire certificates, as well as warning and evacuation systems present in your work time?

6. Does the company have a specially trained person to conduct personnel training in order to inform about means of safe evacuation from the facilities in case of a problem, possible threat and hazard, or any other danger?

7. Does the company have an accentuated risk and hazard management course? Please, choose one of the following options: disagree, neutral, agree, not applicable.

8. What is your experience in your current job position? Please, choose one of the following options: less than 6 months, from 6 months till 12 months, from 2 till 5 years, from 5 till 10 years, more than 10 years.

9. Are you in some way connected to safety risk management in your company? In what way? Please, choose one of the following options: risk identification, hazard analysis forecast, risk strength analysis, risk evaluation and tolerability, control and mitigation?

10. Are the rules of Occupational Safety and Health followed in your company??

11. How often is the training in a risk assessment held? Is it held annually? (once every 5 years, every year, once in six months, every month, every week)

12. Have you considered a risk assessment when you applied for the job?

13. Are there any hazards that require personnel to make a risk assessment of the workplace?

14. Do you feel safe at your workplace?

15. Besides having a proficient person to do the training of the personnel, are there comprehensive evacuation diagrams?

Section 2. Review of Literature Reference

All companies must act according to the Occupational Safety and Health Act from 1970, where there are described three actions (inspect, report and analysis) as to what you must do in case of a hazard. These steps are what make everything legal. Everything should be according to law, and it is by law that all employers are liable to have safe and secure working conditions for their employees (Occupational Health and Safety, 2003).

A lot of times something might go as unplanned. It always happens, though people try to prevent this. However, in any case if something does go wrong the investigation and analysis process should be carried out in full to prevent similar happening in the future (United States Department of Labor, 2011).

Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)

It is interesting that the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) was adopted by the Congress as a guarantee that the employees will be secure during working hours, and their employers will do all it takes to prevent accidents from happening, do something to protect workers from potential hazards and risks to their well-being (State Law Publisher, 2007). Speaking about OSHA, we must keep in mind the following terminology: hazard (any potential danger at work to the well-being of the worker), risk (probability of a hazard appearing), risk management and risk control (should be looked at together as the latter is incorporated into the former basically meaning factors that are needed to assess the potential danger and take measures to prevent it).

Safety Management System (SMS)

In the world of corporate companies, there are always some kind of security systems, mostly dealing with the protection of the companys finances and commercial acts. This system monitors all the elements and evaluates them for potential risks. All of this is done to prevent an unforeseen loss as no company in the world would like to have this headache on its hands. What companies care about most are their finances, so we might say that the SMS system is the governing system of the companys finances.

Potential Hazard Assessment and Determining

In order to assess potential hazards of course all has to be considered. What is suggested is to you use brainstorming activities in order to foresee the potential hazard. It is a must to make an assessment of the risks for the company and take all necessary measures and precautions to improve the company business procedures (Enarsson, 2006).

The process of hazard determining has a significant effect on the security of employee work. The procedure is as follows (State Law Publisher, 2007): first, the whole workplace of the employee is examined (with constant future monitoring for potential hazards), second, the whole structure of the facility is taken into account (doors, exits, disposition, stairways, machinery, appliances, etc.), third, an assessment of the operations needed to make the risk evaluation for potential hazard appearance is made.

Six Points of a Preventive Security System

Through experience, there have been worked out six points of a preventive security system, necessary to foresee and prevent an accident from happening:

Locate the potential hazards to safety through the possibly harmful actions;

Make a criteria and classify the possibility and severity of such hazards;

Determine the existing control tools that will help to manage the hazards;

Assess the capability of each control center;

Select additional control if needed;

Note and observe all the available hazard information.

Efficiency of Risk Management and Risk Assessment

After the potential danger has been determined, it is necessary to start the risk preventing protocol. The risk evaluation is done with the help of OHSMS system that assists the safety management protocol and employs it with all the rules and regulations of the many existing patterns and evaluations (Enarsson, 2006).

In order to correctly assess the risk it is necessary to just ask three questions (What is the probability? How large is the damage? How many people are caught?) (Managing Safety Management, 2000). This is an easy system that helps a lot.

But in order to keep the protocol, just follow the following:

1. Define the hazards, where ordinary daily actions could cause people harm;

2. Imagine what could be damaged or harmed, or cause injuries to determine potential risks;

3. Assess the risks of potential hazards from the practical point of view study risk operations;

4. Note all of the information and analyze it for protection of environment and people in it;

5. Pay attention to plan efficiency and apply solutions to problems when necessary;

6. Revise the evaluation data and often update the information.

Risk Control

All of us know that it is better to prevent the risk, or at least deal with it asap, rather than deal with the consequences that may result in something major. Risk control strategy offered here will be of benefit to those who will use it: (Policy Document, 2002):

1. Eradicate the hazard fix existing damages, use equipment and tools as suggested by the manufacturers manual, have equipment checked regularly;

2. Try to substitute the hazard for a less harmful alternative, e.g. chemical with a lower toxic percent;

3. Isolate people from the potential hazard; restrict access to the hazard environment;

4. Use the safety system to the full extent especially in engineering, like guards if the equipment is dangerous;

5. Always be ready to put administrative controls into action; decrease the amount of work hours, have workload reduced and never forget to use safety tools;

6. On site always have personal protective clothing and equipment (PPCE). It is for your own personal good.

Section 3. Suggested Research Hypothesis

The defining of the hazard process is vital, and it is important to project and foresee its possible consequences like trauma, illnesses, disease or injury (Work Safe, 2011).

These activities could bring us to a positive result showing an efficient risk management system together with a whole stratagem of correct implementation and in accordance with the regulations of the Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS). The OHSMS describes treatment of standard hazards and shows in detail the instructions on how to determine the potential risk factors, correctly evaluate the situation and maintain control over the support actions (Industry Standards and Regulations, 2011).

Section 4. Methodology and Analysis of Research Data

The research study survey was conducted online with 32 participants filling in the questionnaire. These 32 participants are representatives of ADNOC subsidiaries from all over the world. As an addition the participants were requested to provide their thoughts on the matter whether the questions in the survey were comprehendible. The main idea of the survey questionnaire was to analyze the workplace safety conditions at ADNOC.

We received the following results: 63% of males and 37% of females. We regard the results to be rather a challenge on account of speaking about the clean energy investment. Take a look at the table to see the percentage details:

The results here were somehow easily foreseen, as any subsidiary of ADNOC is supposed to have all the rules and regulations noted down in writing 100% of the companies have a written Health and Safety workplace policy. See the table for percentage and count details:

Taking into consideration the results of the survey questionnaire, 67% of the participants, majority, did have the possibility and have actually did the risk assessments to locate possible risks or hazards, whereas 33% did not do this, even though it is required by the team of Health and Safety at work. To better perceive the companys approach and policy towards workplace safety, the question was asked to choose one of the three. 61% claimed that they were well aware and did have all the liability insurances, fire certificates and so on, 39% did not have anything. It is a must to improve yourself as well as your professional skills and knowledge through training courses in the workplace. Special attention should be paid to the topic of workplace safety. In according to the results 77% attended a similar course, and really do have a specially trained person to carry out the training. 23% claims that such a person is absent and they have no such training. We can say that in the majority of ADNOC subsidiaries there are specific people to train the personnel, and here are the findings proving this: Only 7% of participants disagree in saying that they have no such thing. 15% are neutral, meaning they have no clue whether this course exists or not, 3% of the survey respondents did never apply such training at work, finally 75% do have an accentuated risk and hazard management course. It is very important to be aware of the age group of people in the company. It helps better understand how just the safety practice has been through the years. Sometimes there can be unforeseen hazards, and in order to prevent major injury, harm, illnesses or diseases eruption it is necessary to conduct a risk assessment of the workplace. In an emergency situation, people do not always think straight and a visual help in the form of a diagram, mind comprehendible diagram is a must. In many countries where ADNOC subsidiaries are present this is a rule and is written down in the rules and regulations of the country. This is the law. 100% of participants agree to this. Drills are practice sessions made to practice quick evacuation from facilities. The results of the survey proved to be somewhat interesting: 94% o the participants said that these drills are not performed that often, usually once every six month, while the other 6% claim that these drills are done only once every year. Nowadays, a safe workplace is a major plus in personal job assessment; however it is not the main thing. Interesting how people tend to think that a safe workplace is much more preferable than working in less comfortable conditions but for a bigger salary. Section 5. Study Restrictions and Limitations

Having made the study we can make a certain conclusion that there were limitations, specifically: some aspects were not fully analyzed, others were mentioned due to lack of information. Here in the research at hand, the limitations are time and money. To make the research more professional and bring it a notch higher, one can say that there is a strong need to invest in it from the position of the budget. Here it should be noted that some people are still afraid to provide any personal information for a reason as they could be suggested. Others are afraid of their assumptions for reasons that can be offered for the public. Because of this employees were afraid for their jobs, thus they failed to fully respond to all questions with an open heart and 100% correct information. We must always consider this fault factor as the online participants might not be telling the whole truth because of their own personal concerns. Thus it was decided that all the personal data would be classified.
