Police Supervision Crisis
In all supervision duties, there exist some problems. These problems result from different reasons, depending on the type of duties. Police supervision is not an exception. There are many problems associated with supervision in the police department. Some of these problems are gender related, personal interests, power misuse, as well as discrimination of subordinate staff. There should be strict rules governing police supervision in order to eliminate the problems. In addition to strict rules regulating supervision, a lot of training is needed. This training is not only based on police training grounds but even society, as well. This is the only way these problems will be eliminated from the police department. A firm foundation is needed in police officers, which can only result from good upbringing (Alan, 1978).

The key issues in the case study are gender discrimination, undermining of subordinate staff and pursuing personal interests. Gender discrimination is evident in the way the sergeants react and comment on Lieutenant Brown. It shows that they do not respect women nor regard them as leaders. Another issue that is seen in the case study is power misuse. This is seen when the major says that the captain should do anything with Lieutenant Brown even if it is giving Bench some days off. He goes ahead saying that Bench is not protected by the union. The likely root causes of these issues are cultural, as well as power misuse and being inconsiderate of others combined with an obsession with personal interests. Power misuse may be as a result of laxity in disciplining senior officers. That is, rules are quite lenient on senior police officers, giving them the possibility to do whatever they want. For each of these problems, there are possible solutions, but they are difficult to implement. To begin with, to end gender discrimination, the policemen should learn to respect fellow officers regardless of their gender. That is; officers should not treat a woman officer coldly simply because she is a woman. For officers to know it, they ought to be taught that all human beings should be respected from childhood. In addition, while undergoing training, officers should be taught to respect their women counterparts. These are the only ways that men officers will learn to appreciate and respect their fellow colleagues, regardless of gender. Secondly, to solve the problem, senior officers ought to respect their juniors. That is; a senior officer should allow his or her juniors to make decisions within their jurisdiction without interfering. Additionally, senior officers should be ready to listen to and discuss with junior officers. This will help in making appropriate decisions in complicated situations. A senior officer should not be dictatorial or rule with an iron fist. He or she should always be ready to hear other peoples opinion and perspective in situations. In this light, senior officers should be charismatic or democratic leaders. That is; people that have room for others. Lastly, supervisors and all individuals in positions of authority or in power should avoid being selfish. For one to be a good leader, they should not be obsessed of their personal ambitions. This will ensure that they rule with justice regardless of the impact the decisions they make will have on their career. In this case; police supervisors should avoid being afraid of how the outcome of their decisions will influence their personal ambitions and interests. Justice cannot prevail where personal ambitions are under protections. While protecting personal ambitions and interests officers end up killing justice. For all the possible courses of action, there are consequences. The consequences are both positive and negative. That is; there are risks involved while implementing them, there are costs, and there is the possibility of getting a solution to the problems. First, to implement teaching children to respect both genders as they grow up, as well as teaching officers while on training to respect people of both genders, there is a need for personnel to carry out this training. These personnel will be an additional cost in the national budget which is not a so welcome idea. This same solution poses a threat to traditions and cultural norms in the place (Lewis & Short, 1994). That is; to tell children or people to award same treatment to men and women, may be going contrary to the culture of the people. In most cultures, women do not receive the same treatment as men, thus, telling children to do so may be a contradiction to their cultural norms. Regardless of these limitations, it is important for such policy to be implemented since; otherwise, the problem will be permanent. In addition, once it is introduced, it will be cheap and easy to maintain since generations to come will learn from their predecessors. Therefore, even if it may be expensive to implement and may face a lot of opposition, it offers a permanent solution to such problems. Second, while officers get promotions, they should go through some training on how to respect their juniors. Under the same, while promoting, evaluations need to be conducted to ensure that people that are promoted can work with others fairly. This is difficult to implement since even if this is done, an individual may decide otherwise after promotion. To empower this, an officer who is confirmed to look down upon the juniors should be demoted. To implement this point may be quite expensive since it would call for constant evaluation of officers. If it finds root in the department, it will ensure that seniors respect and treat their juniors with regard. Lastly, it is important for officers to be people of integrity. This will ensure that they put the interests of the department and the nation before their own. This can only be taught during training. Officers need to learn that the interest of the country comes before their personal interests. It may be difficult to teach this since people change with time. It is therefore important to bring up children that know how to put their priorities right. That way, it will not be difficult to train them at adulthood. Following the above observations, child upbringing plays an important role in adulthood behavior and character. Therefore, it is recommendable for parents and the society at large to evaluate the values instilled in children as they grow. These are the values that will determine what kind of people they will become in adulthood. It is also recommendable for the government to invest in training good morals and virtues in police officers before giving them offices. This will reduce impunity. In the same light, it is also important for the government to keep police officers under constant evaluations, checks and balances to ensure they work for the welfare of the majority (Brodeur, et al. 1992). As seen from the case study, Lieutenant Brown is relieved of her platoon duties as a result of the aforementioned reasons. Simply because she is a woman, officers under her supervision feel that she collapsed as a result of fear. The major ordered that she be relieved of the duties in order to protect his interests. The major could not listen to the captain since he did not acknowledge his juniors. He does not even respect the decisions that his juniors make as he pursues his ambitions of becoming the chief.
