Letter to the Editor
The college newspaper has recently published the letter which contained the hateful attitude towards the Jewish people. In fact, the letter stated that the Jews control the media and are only interested in how much money they make (The American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise, n.d.). As for me, I absolutely disagree with the statement made in the abovementioned letter. I suppose that it was the complete nonsense and such kind of attitude can be considered as Anti-Semitism or even Xenophobia. Let me have a closer look at these terms in order to proof my point of view.
Anti-Semitism implies the form of ethnic intolerance, which is expressed in hostility based on the prejudice towards the Jews as an ethnic or religious group. The term denotes hostility towards the Jews. However, it is not characterized by the intolerance to all the peoples of the Semitic language. It is believed that the term Anti-Semitism was first used in 1879 by the German journalist Wilhelm Marr, in a pamphlet called The victory of Germanism over Judaism. The term explained the racist notions of biological incompatibility of Europeans, who belonged to the so-called Germanic or Aryan race, and the Jews as representatives of the Semitic race.
It can be even said that Anti-Semitism is a form of xenophobia, i.e. the fear or hate of someone or something alien, strange, unfamiliar. This term implies the perception of others as incomprehensible, unfathomable, and, therefore, dangerous and hostile. In fact, such kind of the world view can cause hostility on the basis of ethnic, religious or social division of people.

Recently, anti-Semitism has become even worse. The variety of neo-Nazi and extremist organizations incite the hate towards the Jews, spreading misinformation and anti-Semitic literature. The media deliberately publishes the materials that distort the historical facts, including denying the Holocaust of European Jewry. The spiteful and targeted anti-Israeli propaganda as well as the appeals to the destruction of the State of Israel are taken place.
The increasing role in such negative attitude is played by the Palestinian-Arab nationalist factor and fanatical reactionary of the Muslim extremists. Nowadays, we can witness not only the revival and strengthening of the old anti-Semitism, but also the development of the new form of anti-Semitism which is called Anti-Israelism. It was manifested, especially hard due to the anti-terrorist operation in the Gaza Strip.
The reaction of Israel, aimed to suppress the armed bandit terrorist groups entrenched in Gaza, led to the rocket and mortar attacks for the civilians of the southern Israel. Consequently, the country was shamelessly introduced to the world as the invader and occupier. It can be said that nowadays there is held the nationalist propaganda campaign based on lies and hatred as well as the fierce media war that justifies the rampant of the terrorist gangs and represents the Jewish people and the State of Israel as the source of tension in the world. Unfortunately, Israel does not pay much attention to the informational confrontation, which leads to the serious adverse effects. Therefore, the misinformation of the worlds society has the negative impact on the formation of the public opinion, making it possible to manipulate peoples minds. As the result, the abovementioned leads to anti-Semitic and anti-Israel rallies and demonstrations, which transform into vandalism and other actions, supporting the global terrorism.
However, it should be mentioned that the U.S. generally stay away from the boom of Anti-Semitism which swept through Europe in the beginning of the third millennium. The federal and local authorities in the United States are actively struggling with the various manifestations of anti-Semitism and other crimes based on the race or ethnicity. For example, in 1999 the U.S. Senate approved the Act on the Prevention of racially or ethnically motivated crimes, providing the more severe punishment for the crimes on this basis. Since 2001, the number of anti-Jewish incidents has dropped significantly. However, the dramatic increase of Anti-Semitism on college campuses is still the reason of the big concern (Lewis, 2012). Nevertheless, it can be said that the majority of the U.S. population, especially among the various Protestant denominations are against any Anti-Semitic actions and activities.
The abovementioned implies that the statement that claims that the Jews control the media and are only interested in how much money they make can be considered as an example of Anti-Semitism. It means that the Anti-Semitic letter should not have been printed in the college newspaper as it could contribute to the rise of Anti-Semitic activities in University. I suppose that in order to avoid any conflicts, the additional regret letter should be published. Moreover, the administration of the college newspaper should apologize for the publication of the Anti-Semitic letter. Otherwise, their activity can be considered as the one which is under the law as it supports the discrimination on the ethnical basis.
