Personal Philosophy of Nursing Paper
Personal Philosophy of Nursing
Florence Nightingale said that Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation as any painters or sculptors work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of Gods spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts (Harris, 2002, para. 6). This quote can depict my whole personal nursing philosophy as nursing is the highest level of art we can imagine. Many people think that being a nurse is not distinguished and reputable. However, if think about this question more deeply and analyze all the advantages, it becomes clear that nursing is a needed and very important sphere without which our health care system would not exist.
If we look at the dictionary, we may see that nursing is an autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people (Crosta, 2015, para. 2). Hence, there are many different functions nurses can perform in their work. Nevertheless, the most important thing is not only about functions list, but the understanding of it.
As a registered nurse, who works as a wound care nurse, I can say that personal philosophy is a significant thing in practice. There are many different cases in our profession as well as various we people in our way. Nonetheless, only own attitudes can help deal with all situations that happen in practice. Wound care nursing is an essential domain as the main task of this direction is to reduce human suffering. It includes debridement, cleaning, and bandaging. At the same time, wound care nurse works not only with wounds and injuries: they have to educate patients and medical professionals on the management and prevention of wounds. It is also an important sphere because it can help people be more educated and careful with their health.

Nursing is a specific area of humans activity, which requires special skills, abilities, and thinking style. Every nurse has to understand that one works with people, not with such dead material, but with real people who truly needs help. Also, it is crucial to remember that one takes the lives of others into own hands. Therefore, it is a huge responsibility, and nurse should have accountability, compassion, and professionalism.
There are not many spheres of work in our society that can be called honorable. Teachers and doctors are the most important professions in the whole world since the beginning of time. They provide humans life and do it better than we have. There are different domains of nursing. First of all, it is a nursing client which is its central concept. The perception of human as a biopsychosocial being is an important part of nursing work as their task is not only to treat some physical damages but also to care for a patient. The second domain is a transition: a nurse can not stay at the same level of development for all the time as working in health care system is a continuous learning process. The third domain is an interaction between nurse and patient. Probably it is the most important thing in nursing work. A nurse has to obtain a confidential relationship with patients, which will be mutual. It is a gift to be able to compel a patient to want to recover even if one does not want it. One thing is to prescribe drugs, but it will have no effect if a person does not want to take these medications. The primary task of a nurse is to make sure that a patient is helped in treatment. The fourth, but not the least, domain is an environment. A hospital is a place people get to in difficult lifes situations. Everybody knows that society can influence different ways. Thus, it is significant to do staying in a hospital less stressful and more pleasant. This is a work for nurses because they spend a lot of time with patients (American Nurses Association, 2010).
All of these domains are close to each other: when all of them connected, we have an effective system of nursing care. The world does not stay at the same place; it develops not even every day but every second. Nursing also has to go with the time. It is difficult to say what can change within a year or even more. The only thing I am truly sure is a relationship between nursing staff and patients. By and large, it is the main thing in a nursing job. No matter which professional qualities you have or which college you finished: if you can not build a healthy and confidential relationship with your patients, you do not do your job right.
We live in the age of information and computerization. It is not a secret for everybody that all spheres of life can become even more computerized in a couple of years. The nursing area is not an exception. What is the point of these activities if there is no interaction between a nursing staff and patient? It is a problem, and it must be solved in a right way.
Challenges that I will face as a nurse are very different. However, most of them will probably be associated with my personality. Nursing is a specific domain of activity that claims very high rigorism. It is not very difficult to learn how to deal with wounds and other humans disorders. However, it is not such easy to raise an own level of patience, kindness, empathy, and respect for others. Every nurse should have very high tolerance for each person regardless of skin color or disabilities presented. The main motto of nursing work is treat other as you want to be treated.
Development of own personality, becoming more patient, and empathy are the main goals for me right now. It is important not to stop in self-cultivation, examine themselves, and own real possibilities. The period of adaptation with the profession is a time when one needs to feel unity with their specific values and hallmarks. Therefore, appreciate nursing philosophy is the primary goal of professional development at the moment.
