Introduction

 

Leadership refers to a requisite facet of existent social contexts, which are aimed at the overall betterment of a group of individuals or an organization/firm entity, with specific individuals being entrusted with various key responsibilities. There are a lot of definitions of leadership, though with three definitive avenues emanating from various existent perspectives. As such, leadership may be described as the ability of an individual to influence others and accomplish various tasks by delegating power, role-play and responsibilities. Leadership is also defined as an individuals ability to execute dominating/influential power over various individuals or a group of people towards a specific direction or course of action (Linden, 2010).

This is due to the fact that such individuals take top positions in organizations. Leadership in general is directed towards overall change through risk taking, as well as promotion of change, as opposed to conformity and obedience to existent status quo. This is geared towards bettering an existent situational context by entailing requisite balance between the overall handling of followers, subordinates or employees, and ones responsibilities, duties and role-play as a leader. Some forms of leadership are inherited, as exemplified by royalty, family inclusion and hierarchical command, while others are gained through hard work and ambition, with some being inherent (naturally occurring) in unique individuals (Kotter, 2012).

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to display my views as pertaining to both leadership and change, in addition to the requisite needs and skills necessary for not only a leader, but also a change agent. There is a need to identity the existent change agentry and leadership skills, which are necessary for further development. In addition, there is a need for the examples of both leaders and change agents, evaluating their congruence and capabilities with those I posses. The identity of various interest areas, reflecting both my career and personal goals, would aid in the overall scripting of a detailed plan, describing requisite steps to be taken towards achieving the change in various arenas. Finally, I plan to expound more on how I will utilize such change and leadership styles through various inputs.

Goals and Objectives

The goals and objectives of this study will be delving into various individual contributions, professional and personal, undertaken towards further enhancing groups or individuals capacities. This is through training others, by aligning various team members around an existent organizational strategy and its pertinent values. Such measures enable the enhancement of unity amongst individuals and group entities. I will display the interdependent nature of ten basic skills regarding outstanding leadership. These include vision/ strategy, relationships, integrity, the arts of communication and persuasion, planning, decision-making, coaching and development, adaptability and most importantly teamwork (Fullan, 2008).

Research Questions

1. What potential effects and net changes can leadership bring about?

2. Based on change agentry, can leadership achieve positive change effect?

3. In the contemporary dynamic social system, is leadership based on change agentry possible and through which procedural measures?

Literature Review

Leadership is a great tool of trade, if I may put it so. There are numerous reasons why I came to such conclusion, as is exemplified by some stack facts and truths. Most efforts by administrators, managers and executives, towards initiating significant change in their organizations fail, therefore, leadership, and specifically one based on change agentry, is of vital importance. By saying a significant change, I refer to a radical shift in focus, objectivity and course-direction. Leadership has over time been crystallized around four major categories i.e. behavioral, power and influence, contingency and trait theories.

Above all, the presence of transformational leadership is often referred to as being the best choice possible, though there are other good choices. The above is directly linked to the fact that transformational leaders do display integrity, knowing how to develop not only robust, but also inspiring the vision of future. Through motivation towards achievement of such visions, this entails team management towards developing more successful and stronger team spirit. Amongst the four aforementioned categories, the trait and behavioral theories are most relevant for my case (Burke, 2011).

Trait theories pertain to the overall characteristics/traits (personality) of individuals, deemed as leaders through the identification of qualities and traits i.e. empathy, good decision-making skills, integrity, assertiveness and likability. Behavioral theories, on the other hand, majorly focus on behavioral traits/characteristics of a leader and resultant influences on team members, students or subordinates. Thus, employee performance is significantly influenced and affected by leadership behavior. For instance, do leaders involve their teams in overall decision-making processes through encouraged support and acceptance, or do they dictate and further expect cooperation.

In this category of behavioral theory, democratic leadership is best suited for further advancement of organizational culture and teamwork, hence a good course of action. My ten basic skills as pertaining to outstanding leadership will be compared to the above. Integrity is crucial in procedures aimed at guiding learning and leadership behavior, especially in organized workshops, training programs and seminars. I created educational activities for ESL adults as well as instructed courses towards improving Math, English and Science skills, in line with coaching and development (Kegan, 2009).

Teamwork, as well as vision/strategy has been achieved through ensuring adult students engagement in various activities. Relationships and persuasion skills have been useful towards developing lesson plans requisite towards advancing greater understanding of English, Math and Sciences. Change theories on their part do overlap majorly with instructional design, with both change and leadership theories often being intertwined. The stages of change theory, exemplified by a persons readiness to change, are vital towards considering the design of various instructional programs.

The presentation of academic content by various instructional strategies, staff development initiatives, as well as implementing effective classroom procedures further enhances vision/strategy, communication and persuasion skills required for achieving outstanding leadership. With all the above measures in place, adaptability and teamwork was achieved through interactive activities, as well as presentation of academic content via instructional strategies (Myers, 2012).

Methodology of the Research

The methodology to be utilized will be both quantitative and qualitative, with random surveying using questionnaires to participants i.e. majorly students (in adult education classes) and fellow teachers, in addition to various researchers amongst other pertinent stakeholders. Having had some experience in the educational sector, as amongst others: an educational consultant, an instructor/substitute teacher and a trainer instructor, I am capable of handling data collection and analysis. I have personal experience in teaching profession, which will aid me in overall research and interpreting the findings. The studys aim is displaying that indeed leadership and change agentry are not only necessary in the contemporary arena, but also workable/achievable.

Conclusion

Leadership as an aspect has and still is pertinent towards human growth and overall development. However, with contemporary social contexts, majority of individuals do find themselves in difficult situations due to the lack of workable solutions, especially about change and change agentry. The latter is required for a better understanding and coping with various occurring situational events, social contexts and governance policies, especially those referring to the education sector. Leaders are individuals ready to take risks and challenging the status quo through change agentry that is aimed at enhancing development and advancement of human societies.
